i agree - this counrty was built with religion in mind, but what is ridiculous, is that unless you do not have a religion, there is some higher being you "worship" so say what your higher being is called instead of God, i would say God, but you know what i mean

with all the different worldviews, there's no way one country is going to be able to please all of them. there's Christian theism, naturalism, deism, athiestic existentialism, theistic existentialism, nihilism, zen buddhism, pantheistic monism, new age, post modernism... there's just no way we can please everyone when some people believe there is a God, when others think that they will become a god, when others don't believe in a god at all, and when still others don't believe anything matters. there's just no way...

no I agree MR we can't please everyone, but we can mutally respect everyone else's beliefs...since 84% of the US believes that there is a god of some type leave the pledge alone but give others the option to skip those two little words that they find offensive. It goes along with live and let live, we just need to try adn keep our noses out of others business and live in a way honoring to God, making it known that we are Christians and if you are interested come talk to me, i don't bite.... Christians need to witness more through their daily lives not just idle talk that means nothing when the rubber hits the road.

exactly!!! we're too lazy, we like to act like we're good Christians and say we are just so we can be like 'hey, i'm a Christian, isn't that neat?' and we don't bother to actually live out the lifestyle we're supposed to and it gives people who really do live that lifestyle a bad name. anymore i don't call myself a Christian, i call myself a follower of Christ. Christians get so much crap thrown at them now because they're saying one thing and doing another... it pisses me off so much....

Frankly, I'm all for letting everyone believe in whatever they want. I just have 2 little requests:

A) Please do not try to "convert" me. If I have a question/wish to know more about your faith, or are thinking of converting, trust me, I'll ask.
B) Please be INFORMED about your religion. If you're going to refer to yourself as being part of a specific religion, know what it actually stands for, and your views within it.

i have to agree with both of you, MR most of the people I know who don't want to become Christians say it is because of the Hypocrisy of the Christians who try to convert them. BJ, It irritates me to no end to have someone ring my doorbell at seven thirty in the morning and try to convert me to their religion, but when i question them about it (if i am feeling nice) and they can't answer my questions it really makes me mad! First that they woke my up early and then they don't know anything about the religion they woke me up to convert me to!!

OMG! I know I havn't been on here in a while ... but I just read the post that Shannon put on here and I have to say: JK ROWLING WOULD NEVER SAY THAT!!!!!

The person who wrote that was on something, I swear! All of those comments were obviously made up! Like those kids said that about Harry Potter! It totally goes against everything written in the books! They're about good triumphing over evil, not the other way around!!!!

I don't claim to be any religion. I've learnt to accept everyone's beliefs for what they are. I don't believe that you should put your faith in a higher force, as you don't know what exactly is out there. I believe that its better to put your faith in yourself and hope for the best in any situation. What can God do that you can't? Make your own future, is what I say.

I was quite surprised reading some of the things about Harry Potter that some people believe. It's really hard to comprehend that some people can be so closed minded. They wonder why children are taking Harry Potter seriously when it is them who is treating the story as if it is a reality and not a work of fiction. I often get surprised when I meet people who say they love Harry Potter, when you would never have expected them to. I think it is a bit extreme for some places to ban Harry Potter, because, as it is in China, if you ban something, it only increases interest in the matter (something JKR actually addresses in the fifth book i think :-S ). So sure, it may be banned, but that doesn't stop people from wanting to read it even more.

Anyway, I probably don't know what i'm talking about, but if it makes sense, then i'm happy :-)

ha, i haven't read canon potter since the first and only time i read the sixth book. I just have a knack to remember little things...

thanks though...just makes my point all the more obvious though. Maybe this was JKR's subtle...very subtle :-P...way to respond to some of the people who banned Harry Potter...

ooh conspiracy theory :-P

EDIT:

Actually, to further my point - i looked at the drug post just before and it reminded me of the American Alcohol Prohibition. I had to do an assignment on it... it's funny how even though it may seem like you do are doing good by stopping one thing, you can create a system of even more badness - in the prohibitions case - organised crime. It just occured to me how strange it is that people are taking what is meant to be a childrens story so serious. I mean...what about santa clause? Is it magic that he is able to fly around the world and deliver presents to every household? But then again, i never know how passionate people can get with their beliefs *shrugs* i should really stop thinking past 10 pm....and its now 1 am...ooooh dear :-P

People just tend to be idiots about these things. Some of the reasons given for why a book should be banned are just incredible (Banning "Little House on the Prairie"? Good luck with that one...)

A lot of the "classics" get challenged and/or banned because, basically, they aren't politically correct. "Huckleberry Finn" is one of the most challenged books, because of "derogatory or insulting language." What was fine back when the story was written is now "offensive." I believe the Little House book that was challenged involved the family getting into an argument with some of the natives, or something along those lines.
Pretty much every book you had to read in high school, someone has protested it (and recently). Just type in "banned books" into Google or any search engine, and be amazed.

Harry Potter shouldn't be banned.
Those quotes supposedly taken from children? Not all of them sounded like children. Not too mention is it said anywhere in Harry Potter that Jesus died because he was weak and stupid? Religion when I come to think of it, is never discussed in Harry Potter. At least, I'm fairly sure it's not. So precisely how is Harry Potter therefore swaying people to Satan? May I also add that Harry Potter is a fiction book, fiction is a keyword there.
And banning books will just heighten peoples curiousity and want to read the book. Look at D. H. Lawrence when he was banned, he must still be banned in places come to think of it.....
It's just so stupid and illogical.

it shouldn't be banned but people are stupid. As far as I can remember Religion is not discussed at all in Harry Potter. I agree with you OS harry Potter is Fiction. is wish people knew the meaning of that word.

Some people are just... argh.
Oh, related, I'd like you get your opinions on this:

My boss was accused of being a "censor" because she said she'd prefer not to have a certain manga (japanese comic) in our collection. Our Youth graphic novel section is meant to be for the 12+ group, but there are a lot of younger kids that read them too (unfortunately). Headquarters bought and sent us a manga (without asking her) that pretty much revolved around sex and there were quite a few... risky panels (one in which a giant exclaimation point is the ONLY thing covering a character). We already have parents who are less than thrilled with our manga collection. So, Cayley sends the book back to headquarters with a note saying, "Thanks, but I don't feel that this book should be in our collection. Perhaps you can forward it to one of the other libraries?"
Now someone at HQ has sent out a memo about this, calling "a certain librarian" a censor and completely insulting her. She DID NOT try to ban or remove the book and once it was installed at another library our patrons could still request it to be sent to them to read.

What do you guys think? Was my boss out of line, or was Headquarters?

Headquaters was definately. Your boss is in that library every day. She sees what the people want. She has seen that the people in your area don't like that particular type of manga and she decided not to put it in the collection. It would be taking up the space that she could put some other more popular book in.
